How did May end so quickly? I think we all blinked and missed it. I know for me, it has completely flown by, and June probably will as well. Make sure you always take some time to relax and don’t get too caught up with trying to stay ahead of everything. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to head to Red Deer for the weekend. What a beautiful city that is. I do get a little jealous when walking around their downtown. But Birdie is hearing that we may have some progress on our downtown redevelopment soon. I can’t say I’m holding my breath, but I am holding out hope. Now that we’re all in spring clean up mode, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo’s Heavy Item Pickup is underway. I noticed this year, you can schedule a pickup online. Plus the Hazardous Materials Drop Off day is today. You can take your materials to Evergreen Christian Reform Church from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. today. So get cleaning. The Northern Kickoff is so close now that we can taste it. It will be a huge event for our community, and a whole lot of fun. Plus don’t forget that they will have a big ribbon cutting as part of the event, and there will be a tailgate party too. The thing that amazes me the most about this CFL game so far, is that there are still a few tickets left last I looked. One thing that I was so proud to be a part of this week was a fundraiser for a local teacher. Elizabeth Dessurealt is a great teacher in our community teaching at Father Mercredi High School. But sometimes life gets in the way of our dreams. Elizabeth is now back home in Ontario fighting lung cancer. The Father Mercredi community has pulled together with several fundraisers to help this young family out. It is just so heartwarming to see the students pull together to help out their teacher, and to see the staff and community work so hard to help out too. Keep fighting Elizabeth, we hope to see you back in the classroom soon. One thing I did notice on the trip south last week was how much work has been completed on Highway 63. It seems like a much more pleasant drive than it was years ago. I think it helped that it’s been awhile since I was on the highway south, but progress does appear to be happening. Yes it’s probably a decade later than we wanted, but let’s try to look at the silver lining of seeing twinning completion on the way. Another thing that highway always makes me think of is Phoenix Heli-flight. Paul Spring and his crew are saints who have saved countless lives on not just that highway, but in so many areas of our region. Yet here we sat again last week not knowing if it was a service that we’d be still able to rely on in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. I can’t for the life of me understand why any level of government wouldn’t help out this service, or wouldn’t understand that it can’t just be fee-for-service because someone has to be on call. Here’s hoping it is figured out and we can go back to knowing Paul Spring and the team will continue to be there when the worst is happening in the area. There is an incredible display of art up now at the Art Gallery at MacDonald Island. The Quad High Art show has taken over the space. It always amazes me how much talent our high school students have. I know I wasn’t making art like that when I was in high school. O.K., there’s also a solid possibility I couldn’t find the art room if I walked back into my old high school now. Make sure you check out all of this art work next time you are on the island! If you hear of a rumour or community event you think birdie should know about, let me hear it at meganmckenny@hotmail.com. Have a great weekend!
